Basic Age Guidelines:

3 months- 24 months old: Parent-Infant

24 months-4 years: Parent-Tot

3-4 years: Preschool Program

5-14 years old: Level Program

10-15 years old: Teen Program

16 + years old: Adult Program

These are general guidelines that do not fit every child. Please see detailed level descriptions below for specific age guidelines of each level The best way to ensure proper level placement is to attend the 'free testing day' prior to registration. An instructor will hold a one-on-one evaluation for your child, will discuss proper level placement, and answer any questions you may have. However, if you are unable to attend or need further assistance with level placement, please call us at (586) 258-2051.

 

Class Descriptions:

Preschool Program (5 and under)

  • Parent-Infant (3-24 months)
    With parent/guardian assistance, infants will learn water adjustment and basic skills through games, songs and activities. Parents will learn the proper holding positions for both front and back skills, which will help facilitate learning. Use of basic swim equipment such as noodles, kickboards and lifejackets will be introduced. Proper submersion technique will be taught for those parents who are interested, however this is always optional. Swim diaper and plastic pants required!
  • Parent-Tot (24 months- 4 years)
    With parent/guardian assistance toddlers follow a lesson plan including water adjustment, floats, basic locomotion and stroke readiness. Skills will be introduced through games, songs and activities. Use of basic swim equipment such as noodles, kickboards and lifejackets. This class will help prepare toddlers for a beginning Preschool class. Swim diaper and plastic pants required!
  • Preschool 1 (3-4 years old)
    For children who are ready to be in a class without a parent/guardian. Class focuses on enjoyment and safety in and around water. Skills include water adjustment, proper air exchange through mouth and nose, front/back floats, arm and leg movements and beginning locomotion through the water. All skills are done with support from the instructor. Classes have a maximum of 5 children per instructor.
  • Preschool 2 (3-4 years old)
    For children who are comfortable going underwater. This class will build upon basic swimming skills so children can gain more confidence in the water. Students begin to float, glide, kick and swim with little to no assistance. Classes have a maximum of 5 children per instructor.
  • Preschool 3 (3-4 years old)
    For children who are comfortable doing basic skills without support from an instructor. Students will float, glide, kick and swim with no assistance. Class focuses on teaching a 'pop-up' or 'rollover breath' to help increase maximum distance. Classes have a maximum of 5 children per instructor.

Level Program (5 and up)

  • Level 1 (5-10 years old)
    For children who are new to swimming. Class focuses on enjoyment and safety in and around the water. Skills include water adjustment, proper air exchange through mouth and nose, front/back floats, kicks, glide and swimming. Classes  have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.
  • Level 2 (5-10 years old)
    For children who are comfortable floating on the front and back and are ready to learn the foundations of front and back swimming. Skills include floats, glides, kicks and swimming with little to no assistance from the instructor. Previous swim experience highly recommended. Classes have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.
  • Level 3 (5-12 years old)
    For children who can swim 10 yards unassisted on the front and back. Students will increase their endurance while learning correct technique for front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Rhythmic breathing, treading water and dolphin/scissor kicks will be introduced. After successful completion of this class, students should be able to comfortably swim 15 years with proper form and breathing on the front and back. Classes have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.
  • Level 4 (6-14 years old)
    Students will refine and increase endurance of the front crawl, back crawl, and elementary backstroke. Breaststroke, butterfly, and side stroke will be introduced. After this class, students should have a general understanding of all 6 strokes and be able to comfortably swim 25 yards on the front and back. This class is typically held inthe 'lap lanes' which is 5 feet deep. Clases have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.
  • Level 5 (7-14 years old)
    Students who have a general understanding of all 6 strokes will work on coordination and refinement which will help increase endurance and efficiency. Flip turns will be introduced. Classes have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.
  • Level 6 (8-14 years old)
    For students who are proficient in all 6 strokes, and are ready to increase endurance and prepare for competitive swim. Students will continue with refinement of strokes in order to swim with more ease, efficiency and power over greater distances. Students will also learn the difference between fixed rest and straight sets, and how to set up an effective swim workout (including warm-up, cool down, etc.). Classes have a maximum of 8 children per instructor.

Teen Program (10-15 years old)

  • Beginner Teen (10-15 years old)
    This class is for students with minimal swimming experience. Students will learn how to float, glide, kick and swim independently on both the front and back.
  • Intermediate Teen (10-15 years old)
    For those who have passed beginner teen or are already able to float, glide, kick and swim independently. Students will learn proper form and techniques for front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke.
  • Advanced Teen (10-15 years old)
    For those who have passed intermediate teen, or are able to swim front crawl, bakc crawl and elementary backstroke with proper technique and have a general understanding of breaststroke. Students will continue to refine those four strokes, while learning side stroke and butterfly. At the completion of this class, student will swim at 'Level 5' and would be eligible to register for 'Level 6.'

Adult Program (ages 16+)

  • Beginner Adult (ages 16+)
    This class is for students with minimal swimming experience. Students will learn how to float, glide, kick and swim independently on both the front and back.
  • Intermediate Adult (ages 16+)
    For thsoe who have passed beginner adult or are already able to float, glide, kick and swim independently. Class will teach the proper form and techniques for front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke.
  • Advanced Adult (ages 16+)
    For those who have passed intermediate adult, or are able to swim front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke with proper technique and have a general understanding of breaststroke. Students will continue to refine those four strokes, while learning side stroke and butterfly. This class will focus on teaching students how to properly set up a swimming workout routine.
