WARREN CDBG IS HOSTING 2ND ANNUAL LEAD AWARENESS FAIR ON THURS. AUG. 24 FROM 2-6:30PM

The City is hosting a Lead Awareness Fair for the 2nd time! It is being held at Owen Jax Recreation Center, located at 8207 E. 9 Mile Road, Warren MI 48089 from 2:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023. (Flyer attached)

The City urges residents who live with or regularly host preschool-age children in their homes to attend this event to get facts about lead-based paint and its potential health risks. The event was designed to inform Warren families with young children or expectant mothers about the dangers posed by lead-based paint hazards in older homes, as well as share resources these families could use to ensure their homes are lead-safe.

Children in attendance will receive goodie bags courtesy of the Mayor’s Office and sponsors, and all attendees will have the opportunity to win raffle prizes (bonus tickets awarded with proof of blood testing!) and cool off with ice cream from Silver Spoons Ice Cream & Bakeshop.

We are hoping to reach a greater audience among families living in Warren homes built prior to 1978, when lead-based paint was still routinely used in residential development.

Attendees will have an opportunity to engage directly with health professionals and City officials to educate themselves about the detrimental effects of childhood lead poisoning, learn how to apply for grant funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that make lead-safe renovations to qualifying owner-occupied or rental homes, and even have their children tested for blood lead levels on-site by Wayne Health’s Mobile Unit.

Furthermore, attendees are encouraged to bring up to ten (10) household items (e.g., cooking utensils, children’s toys, metal decorations, etc.) for lead testing by the Macomb County Health Department and even garden soil samples to be tested by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (please see the directions for bringing soil samples on the attached flyer).
