Home | Press Releases | Statement from Mayor Lori M. Stone on Police Leadership Change
Warren, MI (March 5, 2024) – Effective today, Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer is separating his duties as Police Commissioner with the City of Warren. I am very appreciative of Dwyer’s years of service in law enforcement and specifically his nearly 9 years of service as the Warren Police Commissioner.
I appreciate Dwyer’s assistance during my transition into office. Although Commissioner Dwyer announced his intentions to retire in April, no firm date was mutually agreed upon. It became recently apparent that our viewpoints on hiring no longer aligned. It is essential for members of my administration to have a united vision on major operational decisions going forward. After careful consideration of hiring practices, the decision was made to return the hiring of police personnel back to the Human Resources Department. This decision was reached after consultation and agreement with the Warren Police Officers Association.
I want the residents of Warren to know I am committed to ensuring the Warren Police Department provides the consistent, dependable, and community-based services our residents have come to expect. I have full faith in those providing leadership for the Warren Police Department moving forward. Warren Police Deputy Commissioner Charles Rushton will serve as the acting interim Police Commissioner while I conduct a search for a permanent replacement.
I wish Commissioner Dwyer all the best and I am grateful for his years of service to the Warren community.
