Warren may become the first city in Michigan to display the Purple Heart flag, on Thursday, August 7 at 11:30 a.m. in front of Warren City Hall.
Warren Mayor Jim Fouts will raise the flag he purchased from the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #1818, John Cieko, Jr., executive committeeman, judge advocate, paralegal and retired national service officer of the Military Order. Purple Heart Chapter 1818, Macomb County, Cieko also initiated the request to designate Warren as a Purple Heart City.
“August 7, 2014 is the 232nd anniversary of the Purple Heart that honors soldiers who were wounded or killed in a military action,” said Fouts. “The Purple Heart has been awarded to almost 2 million Americans wounded or killed.”
Fouts said the original Purple Heart, designated as the Badge of Military Merit, was established by George Washington – then commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.
Fouts will present Cieko with a special mayoral resolution on the Purple Heart at the ceremony.
